Shanghai's modernity is a conversation between the Bund's row of international facades and Lujiazui's glass peaks across the river. At the mouth of the Yangtze, it is most pleasant from March to May and September to November, when the weather is neither hot nor cold and perfect for slow strolls. Set aside a generous few days for it.
Common questions before you go
March to May and September to November are the most comfortable, with fresh green or golden plane-tree leaves. Summer is muggy and winter is damp and chilly, and both feel less pleasant.
One day on the Bund and in Lujiazui, one in Yuyuan and the old town, a half-day at the museums, and the rest at Tianzifang, Wukang Road and along Suzhou Creek. The metro gets you everywhere.
The classic spot is the Bund near East Nanjing Road, facing the Lujiazui skyline. For a different angle, take the ferry or ascend the Oriental Pearl Tower; North Bund is quieter and still photogenic.
