Lijiang blends Naxi ancient music, snow mountains and the lanterns of its inns into one slow town. In northwest Yunnan, April to May and September to October bring clear, bright skies, which is the best season to gaze up at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Set aside a generous few days for it.
Common questions before you go
April to May and September to October are the most stable, with little rain and high visibility, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain clearly in view. The July to August rainy season often hides it in cloud.
Two days for the old town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, two for Lugu Lake, and the rest for Shuhe and Lashi Lake. Watch for altitude sickness and do not sprint on the mountain.
Walking inside the old town is not checked, but scenic areas like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain often require the fee receipt. Buying a combo ticket through official channels is simplest.
